Remote Control Plane Starts Brush Fire

PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix Fire Department officials say a brush fire that ignited in the vicinity of Cave Creek Road on Sunday afternoon has gone out.

Fire crews worked most of the night trying to tamp down hot spots while also mopping up the remnants of the fire.

During the blaze’s peak, black smoke and orange flames inched very near to Cave Creek and Jomax Road. In fact, the fire could be spotted from miles away.

“We saw flames shooting into the air as the trees would catch fire,” a resident said to Arizona’s Family. “You could see it from Cave Creek Road.”

The blaze required hours of attention and the help of crews from several cities in order to get the three-alarm fire under control.

Fire Department officials believe the fire, now dubbed the Jomax Fire, started around 2:30 p.m. close to a remote-control airplane field near Cave Creek and Jomax Roads. In fact, this is where Captain Rob McDade of the Phoenix Fire Department and his crew pitched tent to attack the fire.

The Fire Department alleges that somebody at the scene indicated that their small, remote-controlled airplane kicked off the inferno.

“There is an identified field to fly remote controlled planes,” said McDade. “The plane crashed in the field, erupted into flames and now we have a large brush fire up here in the northeast portion of the valley.”

The fire has already spread as far as ten acres when crews arrived. It then moved fast, engulfing 300 acres. At this point, State Wildland and Scottsdale fire teams were brought in to help. Fortunately, the crews contained the fires and no structures were affected or evacuations made.
