As part of a new commitment to transparency, Phoenix police have released body camera footage of a recent officer involved shooting. Compiling the footage along with 911 phone call audio, photos, and narration, this is the third such critical incident briefing. The 15 minute video covers the fatal shooting of Hector Miranda Jr., a 47 year old man.

On September 9, police responded to reports Miranda had stabbed his mother in the head with a knife. Arriving at the corner of Thunderbird Rd and 43rd Ave, they encountered Miranda wielding a knife and handgun. Police discovered the handgun to be a replica.

In the body camera video, a police officer speaks, relaying that Miranda is approaching officers and wants to die.

When Miranda refused to comply with police to stand down and drop his weapons, two officers fired multiple rounds. Miranda went to the hospital, where he later died from his gunshot wounds.

Officers Involved

The officers who discharged their weapons are 22-year-old Ridel Daudinot and 22-year-old Joshua Freer. The officers have been on the force for one year and one and a half years, respectively.

The briefing is the third such release of information surrounding an officer involved shooting. The first briefing from October 30 covers an incident that took place on August 27.

Police departments across the country employ officer body cams in an effort to attain greater transparency into officer protocol in tense situations. Following many such high profile occurrences, public demand for investigation has created a pressure to make body cam footage available.

The Phoenix police department has pledged to utilize the body cam footage in these critical incident briefings. They’ve stated they will produce a briefing for every officer involved shooting going forward from the August 27 shooting. Thus, each video will be released and available for the public on their webpage specifically created for officer involved shootings.
