Rally Cars for Beginners

December 27, 2019
Rally Cars

Rally cars are a blast. Drifting at the perfect apex can give anyone a thrill. Unfortunately, like any automobile racing, it gets expensive. If you’re looking to dive into the world of Rally, check out these cars:

Volvo 240 Rally Cars

This guy is a tank of a vehicle. With a small 4-banger engine, sporting one of the heavier vehicles out there and utilizing rear-wheel-drive, this car can do it. The perfect mixture of the heavyweight and rear-wheel drive makes this guy super fun for a beginner. The good price of a well-maintained 240 can run you about $4k.

VW Golf Hatch

Volkswagen is known for making heavier cars that do well in the snow. It’s no wonder why it is one of the most popular vehicles to race. They can run over most terrain with ease. An old, well-maintained Golf is the perfect beginner car for anyone new racer.

Honda Fit

The Fit is a great beginner wagon. It is lightweight, so it doesn’t take much to zip from the start. It has a great, tight, turning radius and the hatch ads a slight weight to so that you can lay into tight corners.

Ford Escort Rally Cars (Preferably Older)

The old Escort was an amazing rally car. Its weight mixed with a fine-tuned (for Ford) engine gave it the pep and performance to truly be an awesome rally car. The MK1 is typically only in Europe so this one is for across the pond, but if you can snag one of these, then kit this dude out.

Geo Metro

This one isn’t as much of a joke as you might think it is. Rally cars crash. This is inevitable. Especially for beginner racers, having a car that is super easy to fix up and repair quickly is always a great way for learning the trails. Front-wheel drives won’t have you drifting around turns as cool as others, but you’ll have a blast ripping down narrow dirt roads.

This is just the car, and you can find all of these for pretty affordable prices. Unfortunately, making the race legal takes a lot of elbow grease, attention to detail, and of course, a budget. As far as kitting these bad boys out, chances are, you’ll be paying a lot more than what the car is worth in gear so be ready for that. Once it’s all done, you’ll have a pretty slick rally car.
